Today I want to talk about audio recording levels.
Some people recommend that you record at as loud a level as possible without clipping.
Some ‘podcast gurus’ suggest using a mixing board (which isn’t a good idea in the first place) and jacking up the volume on your mic gain, and master gain so that your volume level is as close to clipping as possible.
This is really, really, bad advice.
Here are a few reasons why recoding at such high volume levels is a bad idea.
1) It gives you less room to work with when editiung
2) Cuases you to be anxious about your recording level while recording
3) May cause clipping
Recording at a lower volume level so that you don’t have to worry about these, and other problems.
